Rocket Ship and Moon Cakes

Moon and Spaceship Cake

Moon and Spaceship Cake

My daughter wanted to have a space-themed birthday party, so we baked her a rocket ship and a moon for her birthday party. The rocket ship used Funfetti cake mix in a 9"X13" pan, baked according to directions, with a bit reserved from the batter for three cupcakes. The moon used Devil's Food cake mix baked in two 8" round pans. When the sheet cake and cupcakes were ready, I sliced one of the ends to form the rocket's nose and put the cut pieces at the bottom to form the tail. Then I cut the tops of the cupcakes off and placed them on the rocket as windows. The two round cakes were allowed to fall to create a big "crater" in the middle, and I decorated them with gray icing, making more craters with the back of a spoon. (A half-sphere pan would have been better for this cake, but I don't own one.)
