Pirate Boat Cake

Ewan's 5th Birthday Pirate Ship Cake

Ewan's 5th Birthday Pirate Ship Cake

I made a 2 layer 1/4 sheet homemade chocolate cakes. I used the Wilton sports ball pan to make the boat using a homemade yellow cake which was held together with buttercream frosting. I then cut it in half for one end of the boat and cut off a small amount of the top to create the top deck. I repeated this with the other side but made this lower down for the front of the boat. I made a rectangular cake which i then carved to make the lower decks.

The sails are made of fondant. The mast is dowel rods. The crows nest is a ice cream cup that i cut. The anchor is made from fondant. the boat was frosted with chocolate frosting so there was no need to add food coloring.

I found some chocolate pebbles that i scattered around the sand part which was crushed digestive biscuits (graham crackers). The sea effect was simply merging white and blue homemade buttercream frosting and swirling around (not need to smooth icing here)!

The pirate figures were Playmobil. The railings were part pretzels and part cocktail sticks with string.

I simply stacked the boat on the sheet cake, and put a dowel rod all the way through the highest point of the ship through to the sheet cake for support. The masts offered additional support!
