Puppy Cake
This cake was made for my son’s 2nd birthday party. He loves puppies, and although we think he is way to young to get a dog yet, I decided to make him this puppy cake as a sort of substitute.
I started by creating a chocolate cake in a round pan for the head. I used a simple chocolate cake recipe, nothing too fancy as many of the guests in attendance were young kids. I used a homemade simple vanilla based pink and brown icing to create the decoration for the face, adding a cute little pink tongue while I was at it!
Next, I baked a second chocolate cake in a rectangular pan, and cut out two edges to make the ears for the round head. There was a great deal of remaining cake left over after I had finished this, and so I decided to get a bit creative. I cut out a larger piece of cake in the shape of a dog bone and added it to the complete creation by placing it slightly apart from the head. This worked out great as I was lacking a place to write a birthday message on the face of the puppy!
The cake was a big hit at the party and my son definitely loved it! I think in the end, the creative touch of adding the bone really made the cake unique, which just goes to show you that a little creative thinking while baking can go a long way!
