Flip Flop Cake - Summer or Luau Theme?

This Flip Flop Cake was a self-designed cake and was a big hit with the birthday girl and her friends. This cake was made for a large party of little girls, which is why there is a base under the flip flops. You could just make the pair of flip flops by themselves for a smaller party. This can be used for a beach theme or for a pool theme as this one was.

I made two 9 x 13 cakes. One was used as the base. It was iced with a thin layer of icing and then covered with light brown sugar to resemble sand. I drew outlines of flip flops on a piece of paper and placed them on the other 9 x 13 cake. I then cut the flip flop outliines from the cake and placed those on top of the "sand".

I decorated the flip flops with buttercream icing (using tip #18). For the thongs of the flip flops I used Twizzlers secured with toothpicks stuck into the cake. The Twizzler tops were covered with flowers (using tips #224-flower and #4-center) in the buttercream icing.
Icing recipe: 1 cup solid vegetable shortening, 1 cup butter (softened), 2 tsp. vanilla extract, 2 Tbsp. Wilton Meringue Powder, 2 lbs. sifted confectioners sugar, 10-12 Tbsp. cold water. Cream shortening, butter and vanilla. Gradually and alternately add confectioners sugar and water. Mix until creamy.
